21 AND A WAKEUP

After watching "21 And A Wakeup" I could not consciously give it a ZERO as that would be an insult to films which I gave ZERO Crowns. That's how bad it is.

As I was exiting I was asked by a person involved in the film was the opening song appropriate. My answer was clear: The opening song was the least of their worries. "21 And A Wakeup" may well go down as the worst film ever made - surpassing "Plan 9 From Outer Space" and "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" two films that were never meant to be good. These folk really think they have produced a great film!

Director Chris McIntyre successfully took a fine actress as Faye Dunaway and made her look like someone who failed acting school! He wouldn't know a good camera angle if it walked up and introduced itself. He actually make Tyler Perry look like an Oscar winning director! This is a terrible, terrible film.

The big claim to fame is that "21 And A Wakeup" is the first war movie filmed in Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War. Obviously, the Vietnamese film ministry wasn't threatened by this less than amateurish effort.

In a nutshell, it is about a nurse named Caitlin Murphy (Amy Acker) who is thisclose to getting the hell out of Nam. Her outfight is in one of the remaining hot zones as the US is pulling out. The way her outfit is portrayed the M*A*S*H people should be insulted.

Her head doctor gets killed trying to pull a live grenade out of a patient - another poorly shot sequence. Afterwards she has sex with someone.

After her sex, she gets chewed out by Major Rose Thorn (Dunaway) who basically stands around posing and emoting awful lines.

She agrees to retrieve the late doctors illegitimate daughter who is being kept in a convent in the really hot zone.

To assist her she gets a writer, whom she also screws and a couple of other soldiers and mercenaries to help out.

They go get the kid but kill a few of the enemy en route. Then they save the kid.

She gets praised by Major Thorn just before her transit plane back to the US is about to leave. Then she gets shot by a MP sniper who thinks the base has been comprimised by the enemy. The End. I gave the ending away so that you won't have to waste your money going to see it.

Oh yeah, there are some really bad scenes including one poorly cast with Ben Vereen waving a gun in the operating tent and more bad scenes with Dunaway.

The film plays like a bunch of badly written snippets. The directing is weak - like McIntyre was afraid to tell Dunaway what he needed her to do. Maybe he didn't know himself!

"The Hottie and the Nottie" looks like Best Movie stuff compared to this thing! "21 an a Wakeup" is a awful, awful movie that gives me hope that my own screenplay will come to light!   --GEOFFREY BURTON
