ASTROBOY |

First, "Astroboy" is not anime. It is styled after anime - for better or worse. Director David Bowers is a huge fan of anime as well as
Osama Tezuka's cartoon series Astroboy. However, his film version has similar styles but with more lush, fuller animation. The characters have a softer feel than anime offers. We'll
call it anime for Americans! The story is the problem. It was derived from Tezuka's series, but adapted by Timothy Harris. And it seems Harris was trying to make a story that would attract both
children and adults. |

That was the first mistake. He is a psychologist who is determined to help his wife get over the loss of the baby and getting her off the medicines she has become
dependent on. He suggest they retreat to their backwoods cottage to relieve some of her tension. By relieving her tension he means to screw her as much
as possible. To say "Antichrist" borders on porn is like saying Christmas might be in December. Make no mistake, there is some serious sexing going on. |

But much like Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution" if that were all there were to the film it would have been pretty boring. No the couple soon
realize that the woods are full of the demons that have plagued her mind since the death of the baby. The trees and wildlife literally confront them and the sexing going on. This is when "Antichrist" becomes a serious horror-like thriller. But don't ask me the symbolic meaning of the talking fox who seems to be in charge of the entire menagerie! "Antichrist" sexually and psychologically goes where few films have gone before. If you are a prude and wince at two people boning every five minutes in detail this is not the movie for you. If you enjoy the otherworldly
thoughts of genuine ecstasy and the erotic sub-demons released in all of us, "Antichrist is for you. Is the sex real? Let's put it this way, a porn star was Dafoe's stunt double! --GEOFFREY BURTON
