HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE |
|
|
Will Harry Potter ever get laid? We have seen Harry (Daniel
Radcliffe) grow up before our eyes. He has faced dangerous challenges, seen
the death of his parents and friends, been zapped, whipped and everything
imaginable. He is close to the cutest gals in the school and yet he has even
gotten to first base. "Harry Potter & the Half Blood
Prince" could be called, Harry Potter Almost Comes of Age But Doesn't. It is, nevertheless, as in the
tradition of the previous five films, a well-made and entertaining film. |

The storyline is pretty basic. The
Dark Lord is out to whack Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) so he can whack Harry
Potter. But to whack Dumbledore he needs an assassin inside the school. The really insignificant wizard
named Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) is chosen for the job, but to guarantee
completion Severus Snape (Alan Rickman) is ordered to swear to help Draco
with the unbreakable oath. But Dumbledore trusts Snape to no
end. What’s up? |

Meanwhile, a legendary professor -
long retired - Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent) is brought back from
retirement so Harry can learn what secret spell he taught to the student who later
became the Dark Lord Valdamore. Harry enrolls in Slughorn's class and winds up with a used copy of the class textbook
with all the correct answers (plus a few more tricks) already in it. The previous owner signed it only as 'The Half Blood Prince'. It
is a mystery as to whom this former student was and only adds to the mystery surrounding Slughorn. Everyone's hormones are raging but Harry's. His best friend Ron
Weasely (Rupert Grint) is a hot item after winning the school tournament and
soon gains a paramour that infuriates Hermione (Emma Watson). Harry is still oblivious to the fact
that Ginny (Bonnie Wright) has the hots for him! |

The film builds to a semi-climatic
ending resulting in the death of an important figure. Harry does get laid.
And the Dark Lord is still around. Those of you who already read the book
know what happened. Those who didn't will appreciate the
tradition of fabulous storytelling continue. Moreover director David Yates
adapts the sixth book perfectly as to set up the last book. By the way, the last book "Harry
Potter and the Deadly Hallows" will be delivered in two installments -
to keep the cash coming in. --GEOFFREY BURTON
