MY ONE AND ONLY

I nearly fell out my seat when George Devereaux (Logan Lerman) opines about Los Angeles "There's too much sun out here." Of course, George Devereaux is none other than the always tanned George Hamilton.

"My One and Only " is the official bioptic about the actor. It is as entertaining as the actor himself; whether it's true or not.

It details Hamilton's young years when he, his mother and his brother Robbie leave his dad Dan Devereaux (played by Kevin Bacon) and embark on an journey from New York and eventually landing in Los Angeles.

Renee Zellweger plays his mom, Anne Devereaux a classic 1950s Southern "lady" who would not think of getting a job but relies on the kindness of well heeled husbands to provide her - and her sons - with a comfortable living.

It opens with George eentering a Cadillac dealership to buy an Eldorado with cash. He is barely 17 or so and the salesmen question where he got the cash. He told them his mother sent him down to buy the car which they somewhat doubt until Anne walks in. They soon drive out with the car for far less than the sticker.

Anne had just walked in on her husband having sex with a young lady. Apparently this was a common occurrence. But this time she's had enough. She packs up the kids and leaves with little argument from Dan.

But Dan makes a great leaving as a big band leader and writer of his one hit single "My One And Only" which was somewhat ironic given his infidelity. It will be hard for Anne to find another husband who can afford to put her up in the equivalent of a New York Park Avenue address.

Yet with her two sons in tow she sets out on a quest to find someone to fill those shoes. Using a reference of men formerly smitten with her.

The journey send her to Boston, Pittsburgh, St Louis then [finally] Los Angeles. The men range from a military officer to a chronic liar given to marrying women.

Her choice in men annoyed George but seemed to have little effect on Robbie (Mark Rendall) who is portrayed as a fop. He even gets to the point where he abandons his mother and brother.

But "My One And Only" is Zellweger's movie. She is charming and delightful as a woman who believes that men will still bend over backwards for her and provide for her family. It is a carryover from her role as Lucy Hill in "New In Town"... but better.

Director Richard Loncraine keeps the pacing perfect and gets the most from the cast. Bacon is perfect as Dan and seems content to let Zellweger shine.

George Hamilton is the executive producer - no doubt making sure the story is appropriate. But knowing his personality he may given over some truth to humor to keep the film enjoyable. It is.   --GEOFFREY BURTON
