SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE

Jay Baruchel pretty much has the geeky, wimpy guy down pat. I noticed it in "Almost Famous" a few years ago and in the few noticeable roles he's had since. Even in "Tropic Thunder" he look like a child playing soldier.

He is not the guy cast as the ladies man. Like Michael Cera, he would be the guy most hot chicks wouldn't even notice.

That is why, "She's Out of My League" is a farce. It's about a guy who gets a really hot chick (or at least hot by today's sub par standards) to fall head over heels for him. It doesn't really happen that way.

It is nothing new. We have seen this formula before and it is just as unrealistic as ever. Therefore don't blame me when I say I went in expecting the film to suck. Silly me.

I should no better after movies like "Super Bad" and "The Hangover" that when I lower my expectations the movie is always much better. So let it be said about "She's Out of My League".

Jay Baruchel is Kirk, a TSA officer at Pittsburgh's airport. He is just a grunt and, in light of the current security situation, doesn't make you feel confident about airport security.

After retrieving the forgotten cell phone of Molly (Alice Eve) a hot (by today's sub par standards) event planner, he returns it to her personally. After a couple of conversations she is into him.

Kirk is insecure and nerdy. His friends use the rating system (1 -10) and tell him he is a 5 or 6 at best. Moreover they convince him that there can not be such a separation between a 10 (Molly) and her guy. It won't last.

So his friends, specifically Stainer (TJ Miller) discourage him like he needed any more discouragement.

Thrown into the mix is his ex-girl friend Marnie (Lindsay Sloane) who dumped him and is dating another guy while also still on his parents guest list. She is constantly over at his house with her new beau, rubbing his face in the fact that she has dumped him. After meeting his new hot (by today's sub par standards) girlfriend, suddenly she wants him back.

Then, there are a couple of other side kicks Devon (Nate Torrence) and Jack (Mike Vogel) who offer up two extra comeduc takes. It is a very formulaic film.

And yet I laughed.

Yes, once again it was funny. Even the testicle shaving scene and dog licking scene were funny. I've seen it before and yet it was funny...again. "She's Out of My League" is director Jim Field Smith's first feature length film and works. It's not great, but it's worth a buck or two for a good laugh.   --GEOFFREY BURTON
