THIS IS IT

"This Is It" is not nearly as good as many will leave you to believe. If Michael Jackson were still alive, the reaction would be lukewarm... at best.

When compared to a similar music video/documentary such as... let's say Martin Scorsese's "Shine a Light" (based on the Rolling Stones), "This is It" lags far behind.

The best thing about the film is the ability to bring it to market in such a short period of time. It was originally meant to be a behind the scenes film about the concert tour. Alas, the concert tour never happened.

The up close and person part is mediocre providing little more light than we already know from previous music. I recall a behind the scenes piece following Thriller that pretty much covered the same stuff.

Michael Jackson does dance. However, he dances like a 50 year old man. It is choppy and not nearly as smooth as in his younger days. And no, he led the other dances and did not follow - else he would have been left.

Hear some of the old music did give my foot reason to tap but so would have listening to the old music on my i-pod.

Seeing Michael even more gaunt than before makes one understand why many said he wasn't ready for a tour of such monumental size.

As an epitaph, "This Is It" is adequate. But as a career highlighting send-off, the VH-1 special was much better.

So, I'm going to call "This Is It" what it really is... a way to recover the cash lost on a concert tour that never was. That is it!   --GEOFFREY BURTON
