CIRQUE DU FREAK: THE VAMPIRE'S ASSISTANT

"Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" is a very stylish and entertaining film though it doesn't seem to know if it wants to be a comedy or ...

Consistant with my theory if a book is good enough (or sometimes even sucky ones) it'll be made into a movie - this my reason for not reading the books! Based on the first of Darren Shan's trilogy of books about a battle between vampire factions, "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" should whet the apetite of fans.

Much like his "American Dreamz", director Paul Weitz presents a visually stunning film with crisp scenes, clean and clear special effects, but sadly a goofy plot that will remind one of the Twilight series. Can't vampires just get along anymore?

A teenaged boy named Darren (Chris Massoglia) jets out of his house with his up-to-no-good best friend Steve (Josh Hutecherson) to see a freak show called Cirque du Freak. It is billed as the worlds oldest freak show.

There they encounter the usual sordid characters one would find at a freak show including Larten Crepsly (John C Reilly) a vampire whom Steve recognizes from old vampire books.

Steve immediately wants to become a vampire as he's really into the beasts. But Crepsley rejects him as having bad blood.

But as fate would have it Steve gets attacked and nearly killed. To save his friend Darren volunteers to become a vamp - basically Crepsley's assistant in order to save Steve. It works but pisses Steve off that Darren is the vam and not himself.

Enter another group of vampires who are rather evil, then go ahead and make Steve a vampire so that he can help them destroy the goodie-goodie vampires.

All of this is orchestrated by an odd little fat man named Mr Tiny (Michael Cerverais) who is like the mother of all vampire masters.

It seems there is a prophacy that says the two former best freinds will lead their side against the other in an all out vampire war.

Crepsley really wants no part of it which is why he's been hiding out with the freak show.

Natch, Darren falls in love with one of the freaks, a girl named Rebecca (Jessica Carlson) who also happens to have a tail like a monkey.

But since he is theorhetically dead, a monkey girl isn't a bad option for a virgin vampire.

"Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" is colorful graphically satisfying and right of Reilly's alley. It's not as humorous as some his other but is nevertheless very entertaining.   --GEOFFREY BURTON
